As I stand here in the literal fog, I can’t see my driveway, let alone the road ahead. This parallels the state of my heart. A heavy cloud surrounds me, and I don’t know how to pass through to the other side.
I don’t mean to be mysterious. Just know my family and I are praying hard for the hurts of someone we love, and it will be their story to tell when they are ready. But they are not alone in their hurt, and neither are we — even when it feels very, very lonely.
What am I to do?
So what am I to do, shrouded in the cloud? The heavy, seemingly impenetrable fog? I don’t know what to do, Lord, but my eyes are on You.
He reminds me that when His Israelite children left behind the bondage of Egypt they were pursued by the enemy. With the Red Sea on one side and enemy on the other, they had no where to go.
What did God do?
“Then the angel of God, who was going in front of the Israelite forces, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and stood behind them. It came between the Egyptian and Israelite forces. There was cloud and darkness, it lit up the night, and neither group came near the other all night long.”
Exodus 14:19-20
The Israelites, in sheer terror, thought Moses had led them to their grave. But God, had really positioned them to see His glory. He covered them by a cloud to protect them from their enemy.
Hidden in God’s protection
As I stand in the midst of a literal cloud, that’s what I believe. It may feel like a dead-end road, with no way forward, but I know it’s really God’s protection. He’s concealing me from the enemy before He makes a way where there is no way. The cloud may prevent me from seeing the way forward, but it’s also confusing the enemy.
“During the morning watch, the Lord looked down at the Egyptian forces from the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the Egyptian forces into confusion. He caused their chariot wheels to swerve and made them drive with difficulty. “Let’s get away from Israel,” the Egyptians said, “because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!”
Exodus 14:24-25
So I’m here for it. I’ll take position at the morning watch. I’m holding high my trembling, but holy hands, dancing in a cloud of God’s glory. We’re going to march right down a highway through the sea when God says it’s time.
Note:
These words were first inspired by the prayer devotional I’m reading — Threadbare Prayer by Stacey Thacker. This is not my first time through these 100 days of prayer. But as I pray my way through again now, I can’t help but feel it was written for me personally, exactly for this time. If your heart is feeling threadbare, let this prayer book be the guide that holds your hand and helps you find the words to say.
Prayer:
“I don’t know what to do, Lord, but my eyes are on You,” (2 Chronicles 20:12).
